There’s a new Mural coming to Downtown McKinney by a world renowned muralist. Guido van Helten is an Australian-born visual artist and photographer who has been asked to paint a large-scale mural on McKinney Mill's north side silo’s. He is an artist who creates street art and makes large-scale murals.
McKinney is aware of the importance arts play in improving the community and plans to paint a massive new mural on the silos. The city will have more murals. The mural is located directly across from Hwy 5 . The primary funding source will be grants and contributions. Gap funding will be provided by the city's hotel occupancy tax, which is not to exceed more than $380,000
The mural would serve as a visual link between downtown attractions and future revitalization projects on the east side of McKinney. Officials said that silos can be seen from Virginia Street, downtown. In January, the city launched a new website that details all the projects taking place in the area. It covers the expansion and relocation of Tupps Brewery as well as the new municipal building and road projects.
According to the website of Downtown McKinney, downtown boasts more than 120 shops and over two dozen restaurants. McKinney has seen more public murals in the last decade.
