Choosing the Perfect Finish Matte vs. Glossy Prints at Kelly's Art Shack

When it comes to showcasing your favorite artwork or photos, the finish you choose can make all the difference. At Kelly’s Art Shack, we know that every piece has its unique charm, and selecting the right print finish can elevate your artwork in exciting ways. Today, we’re diving into the two most popular finishes: matte and glossy. Let’s explore how each option can enhance your artwork, so you can make an informed choice for your next print.

The Shiny World of Glossy Prints

Glossy prints are all about vibrancy and impact. With a shiny, reflective coating, these prints bring your images to life by enhancing color saturation and contrast. The result is a bold, eye-catching print where the colors truly pop, and details come through with crisp clarity.

When to Choose Glossy Prints:
  • Vivid Photos: If you have a photo or artwork that’s bursting with color, a glossy finish will intensify those hues, making the print appear even more dynamic.
  • Family Memories: Glossy prints are perfect for personal photos, such as wedding shots, family portraits, or vacation memories. The shiny finish adds an extra layer of depth and gives your keepsakes that professional feel.
  • Marketing Materials: For flyers, posters, or any promotional material, glossy prints catch the eye and draw attention with their bright, reflective quality.

However, keep in mind that glossy finishes can produce glare under bright lights, and fingerprints or smudges may be more noticeable. For prints that will be handled often, or displayed in a well-lit area, you may want to consider another option.

The Elegant Appeal of Matte Prints

Matte prints offer a completely different experience. With a non-reflective surface, they provide a softer, more muted appearance. The texture on a matte print adds a subtle touch of luxury, giving your artwork a refined and sophisticated look.

When to Choose Matte Prints:
  • Fine Art Reproductions: If you’re looking to reproduce a painting or drawing, matte prints are a fantastic choice. The textured finish brings out the nuanced details of brushstrokes or pencil lines, making your print look more like the original artwork.
  • Black and White Photography: For a timeless, classic feel, matte prints are a favorite for monochrome photography. The lack of glare helps emphasize the contrasts and shades without distracting reflections.
  • Framing Without Glass: If your artwork won’t be protected behind glass, matte prints reduce glare and reflection, making them easier to view from any angle.

Matte prints are also less prone to showing fingerprints, making them a practical choice for high-traffic areas or pieces that will be touched frequently.

How to Decide: Matte or Glossy?

At Kelly’s Art Shack, we understand that every artwork and photo is unique. Here are a few questions to consider when choosing between matte and glossy finishes:

  • Where will the print be displayed?
  • For bright rooms or spaces with a lot of natural light, matte prints minimize glare.
  • In dimly lit areas, glossy prints can help the artwork stand out.
  • Is color intensity important for this piece?
  • Glossy prints enhance vibrancy and are ideal for colorful artwork.
  • Matte prints offer a subtler touch, perfect for soft tones and fine details.
  • Will the print be handled often?
  • Glossy surfaces can show fingerprints, while matte prints are more resilient.

Your Art, Your Choice

At Kelly’s Art Shack, we believe in celebrating creativity in all its forms. That’s why we offer both matte and glossy finishes to suit any style, mood, or display need. Whether you’re looking for a high-impact, glossy look or a more refined, matte finish, our printing options will ensure your artwork shines in its own way.

  • What’s the main difference between matte and glossy finishes?

Matte finishes have a non-reflective, textured surface that gives prints a softer and more muted appearance. Glossy finishes have a shiny, reflective surface that enhances color vibrancy and contrast, making the print look more vivid and dynamic.

  • Which finish is better for framing?

Both finishes can be framed, but it depends on the environment. Matte is ideal for framing without glass, as it doesn’t produce glare. If you plan to use glass, matte helps reduce reflections. Glossy prints work well when framed behind non-reflective glass to maintain their vivid appearance.

  • Does lighting affect the choice between matte and glossy?

Yes, lighting plays a big role. Matte prints are better for brightly lit spaces because they don’t reflect light and cause glare. Glossy prints are ideal for dimly lit areas where their shine can help enhance the visibility and vibrancy of the artwork.

  • Are fingerprints an issue with these finishes?

Glossy prints are more prone to showing fingerprints and smudges due to their smooth, reflective surface. Matte prints, with their textured finish, are more resistant to visible smudges, making them a practical choice for prints that will be handled frequently.

  • What type of artwork is best suited for matte prints?

Matte prints are great for fine art reproductions, black and white photography, watercolor paintings, and artwork with soft or pastel tones. The matte finish provides a more classic, elegant look and reduces glare, allowing subtle details to stand out.

  • When should I choose a glossy finish for my prints?

Glossy finishes are perfect for colorful, high-contrast artwork, such as digital illustrations, pop art, portrait photography, and nature scenes. The shiny surface enhances the vibrancy and makes colors appear more saturated and bold.

  • Do matte or glossy prints last longer?

Both matte and glossy prints can be long-lasting if properly cared for. However, matte prints tend to be more durable in terms of handling because they resist scratches and fingerprints better than glossy prints.

  • Can I switch a matte print to glossy or vice versa after it’s printed?

No, once a print is finished with either matte or glossy coating, it cannot be changed. The choice of finish is applied during the printing process, so it’s essential to decide on the look you want beforehand.

  • Do glossy prints have better image quality than matte prints?

Image quality is not inherently better in glossy prints, but the shiny finish does make details appear sharper and colors more vivid. Matte prints still provide high-quality detail but with a softer, more natural look.

  • How do I choose the right finish for my artwork?

Consider the style of your artwork, the lighting conditions of where it will be displayed, and your personal preferences. If you prefer a classic, understated look, go for matte. If you want a bold, eye-catching finish, glossy may be the better choice.

An immersive night of sound, games, and art-fueled energy in the heart of McKinney.
By Justin Liles May 20, 2025
On May 17th, Kelly’s Art Shack turned into a game-lover’s paradise as we hosted our very first Trivia + Bingo Night — and wow, what a night it was! From clever trivia teams to fast-paced bingo rounds, the Shack was full of laughter, wit, and good vibes. Here’s a peek at what made the event a hit — and a few things we’re already working on to make the next one even better. ✅ What Went Great The Host & Vibes Let’s start with the star of the show — Tanner , our hilarious MC. His quick wit, perfect pacing, and crowd banter kept everyone entertained and engaged all night long. The Space The Shack was set up beautifully, with indoor seating that felt cozy but energetic. Whether guests came to play hard or just soak in the fun, the space delivered. The Tech The software we used to run the games was on point — smooth, responsive, and easy for everyone to follow. Promotion & Turnout Our flyers and messaging worked! We had a solid crowd and a buzz going around town even before the event kicked off. 🚧 What We’re Improving Game Structure The open “come anytime” format (4PM to 12AM) was flexible but also a bit too loose. For future events, we’re thinking of adding scheduled game blocks or time-limited rounds so guests know when to arrive and how long to expect to play. Bingo Speed A few folks mentioned the bingo rounds were a little too fast. We heard you! We’ll slow things down so everyone can stay in sync and enjoy the fun without rushing. Prize Planning While we had fun prizes to give away, we’ll be more structured next time with a set prize list . That way players know what’s up for grabs and we keep the energy high. 🚀 What’s Next We’re already planning round two — with even better pacing, clear time slots, and some exciting new twists. Expect a standardized prize lineup , slower bingo calling , and the same awesome energy from Tanner and the Shack crew. Thank you to everyone who came out and made the night so special. If you missed it — don’t worry, we’ll see you at the next one. 🎤🎱✨ Stay tuned right here or follow us on socials for the next Trivia + Bingo Night announcement!

How Our Trip to New Orleans Changed the Way We See—and Create—Art When we touched down in New Orleans, we weren’t sure what to expect—jazz on the corners, powdered sugar in the air, yes. But the art? It didn’t just live in galleries. It spilled out onto the streets, onto buildings, into alleyways and old houses, into movement, memory, and rhythm. We set out to explore the galleries, yes—but what we found was a heartbeat. And that heartbeat is now woven into everything we do at Kelly’s Art Shack. The first stop was New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA) , tucked inside the lush, almost mythical City Park. We wandered through centuries of work—classic to contemporary—and ended up spending more time than we planned in the Besthoff Sculpture Garden. There’s something about standing under giant oaks, surrounded by iron and bronze, that rearranges your thoughts. That contrast—old trees, new shapes—made us rethink how we layer texture and tone in our own pieces. From there, we dove into the Ogden Museum of Southern Art , which felt like a true conversation with the South. It was unapologetically raw in the best way. Every piece felt like it had lived a life—weathered storms, danced in kitchens, whispered family secrets. We came out of Ogden realizing we wanted to bring more storytelling into our work. Not just pretty colors. Truth. We were especially moved by Studio BE . It’s not your traditional gallery—it’s a massive Bywater warehouse-turned-temple of social consciousness. Brandan "Bmike" Odums’ towering murals and mixed-media installations left us speechless. Art here isn’t a product. It’s a call. A punch. A prayer. This stop cracked something open in us. We left scribbling notes for a new series centered around voice and legacy. The Stella Jones Gallery was like entering a sanctuary. For almost three decades, they’ve been celebrating Black artists in ways that feel personal and deeply intentional. We spoke with one of the gallery assistants who told us, “Here, art is memory.” That stuck. It made us rethink our own curation back home—how we display, how we honor, how we pass stories forward. Jonathan Ferrara Gallery f lipped the script again. One of their installations was an entire room filled with suspended keys—thousands of them. It was haunting and beautiful. And it reminded us that art can be small and massive at once. This idea of repetition and accumulation is now making its way into a new wall piece we’re building for the Shack. Some of our most joyful discoveries happened in quieter corners. The New Orleans African American Museum in Tremé wasn’t about spectacle—it was about soul. About lives lived with dignity, in resistance and joy. We spent an hour just sitting in their garden. It gave us the idea for a new immersive class: painting as reflection, painting as ancestry. We also wandered into Boyd Satellite Gallery on a whim and found ourselves in a conversation with a visiting artist about sound and form—how jazz impacts brushstrokes. The whole exchange is influencing a new sonic art series we’ll be launching in the fall. At Arthur Roger Gallery , the curation was electric—modern, sharp, but still warm. One room held a sculpture that looked like a deconstructed brass band mid-parade. We snapped a dozen photos of it and went straight to the sketchbook when we got back to the hotel. The Historic New Orleans Collection reminded us that preservation is art. It showed us how architecture, maps, and letters can tell visual stories too. We’re now planning an exhibit at Kelly’s that integrates old McKinney photographs and documents into mixed media pieces. Finally, the Newcomb Art Museum reconnected us with something that felt personal—female artists, pottery, craft. It was humble, meticulous, and powerful. We left with a new respect for small formats, for repetition, for letting the hands lead. What’s Next at the Shack? Inspired by these spaces, we’re bringing that New Orleans fire back to Texas. You’ll see it in our next exhibit: “Spirits of the South”, launching this fall. You’ll feel it in our new couples workshops and mixed media classes that dive into heritage, music, and movement. And you’ll hear it in the playlist we’re building—straight from the streets of Frenchmen and Tremé. New Orleans didn’t just inspire us—it challenged us. And from here on out, we’re answering that challenge with color, soul, and story.
