This weekend’s Texas Music Revolution brought music, creativity, and community vibes to Downtown McKinney — and while we had a blast, we're always looking to grow from each experience.

✨ Highlights:

Our live band delivered both nights, arriving on time and playing to the energy of the room like pros.
The vibe inside the Shack was full of positive spirits and creative energy from our team and guests.
We pulled together some awesome event graphics and email promos that captured the mood beautifully.
The space was fully cleaned and styled before showtime, thanks to the hustle of our crew.

�� What We’re Working On:

We didn’t get the bingo & trivia crowd we hoped for — next time, expect clearer promos and maybe a fresh twist.
While designs were on point, we completed them the day-of, giving us little time to hype things up.
It was a hot one! The air was stagnant, which made things tough. We’ll be investing in cooling setups for summer events.
We operated at about 65% of our target turnout — which tells us there’s plenty of room to build our reach.
Clean-up and prep took longer than expected. We’ll streamline setup to give ourselves more breathing room next round.

How Our Trip to New Orleans Changed the Way We See—and Create—Art

When we touched down in New Orleans, we weren’t sure what to expect—jazz on the corners, powdered sugar in the air, yes. But the art? It didn’t just live in galleries. It spilled out onto the streets, onto buildings, into alleyways and old houses, into movement, memory, and rhythm.

We set out to explore the galleries, yes—but what we found was a heartbeat. And that heartbeat is now woven into everything we do at Kelly’s Art Shack.

The first stop was New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA) , tucked inside the lush, almost mythical City Park. We wandered through centuries of work—classic to contemporary—and ended up spending more time than we planned in the Besthoff Sculpture Garden. There’s something about standing under giant oaks, surrounded by iron and bronze, that rearranges your thoughts. That contrast—old trees, new shapes—made us rethink how we layer texture and tone in our own pieces.

From there, we dove into the Ogden Museum of Southern Art , which felt like a true conversation with the South. It was unapologetically raw in the best way. Every piece felt like it had lived a life—weathered storms, danced in kitchens, whispered family secrets. We came out of Ogden realizing we wanted to bring more storytelling into our work. Not just pretty colors. Truth.

We were especially moved by Studio BE . It’s not your traditional gallery—it’s a massive Bywater warehouse-turned-temple of social consciousness. Brandan "Bmike" Odums’ towering murals and mixed-media installations left us speechless. Art here isn’t a product. It’s a call. A punch. A prayer. This stop cracked something open in us. We left scribbling notes for a new series centered around voice and legacy.

The Stella Jones Gallery was like entering a sanctuary. For almost three decades, they’ve been celebrating Black artists in ways that feel personal and deeply intentional. We spoke with one of the gallery assistants who told us, “Here, art is memory.” That stuck. It made us rethink our own curation back home—how we display, how we honor, how we pass stories forward.

Jonathan Ferrara Gallery f lipped the script again. One of their installations was an entire room filled with suspended keys—thousands of them. It was haunting and beautiful. And it reminded us that art can be small and massive at once. This idea of repetition and accumulation is now making its way into a new wall piece we’re building for the Shack.

Some of our most joyful discoveries happened in quieter corners. The New Orleans African American Museum in Tremé wasn’t about spectacle—it was about soul. About lives lived with dignity, in resistance and joy. We spent an hour just sitting in their garden. It gave us the idea for a new immersive class: painting as reflection, painting as ancestry.

We also wandered into Boyd Satellite Gallery on a whim and found ourselves in a conversation with a visiting artist about sound and form—how jazz impacts brushstrokes. The whole exchange is influencing a new sonic art series we’ll be launching in the fall.

At Arthur Roger Gallery , the curation was electric—modern, sharp, but still warm. One room held a sculpture that looked like a deconstructed brass band mid-parade. We snapped a dozen photos of it and went straight to the sketchbook when we got back to the hotel.

The Historic New Orleans Collection reminded us that preservation is art. It showed us how architecture, maps, and letters can tell visual stories too. We’re now planning an exhibit at Kelly’s that integrates old McKinney photographs and documents into mixed media pieces.

Finally, the Newcomb Art Museum reconnected us with something that felt personal—female artists, pottery, craft. It was humble, meticulous, and powerful. We left with a new respect for small formats, for repetition, for letting the hands lead.

What’s Next at the Shack?

Inspired by these spaces, we’re bringing that New Orleans fire back to Texas. You’ll see it in our next exhibit: “Spirits of the South”, launching this fall. You’ll feel it in our new couples workshops and mixed media classes that dive into heritage, music, and movement. And you’ll hear it in the playlist we’re building—straight from the streets of Frenchmen and Tremé.

New Orleans didn’t just inspire us—it challenged us. And from here on out, we’re answering that challenge with color, soul, and story.

There’s a new Mural coming to Downtown McKinney by a world renowned muralist. Guido van Helten is an Australian-born visual artist and photographer who has been asked to paint a large-scale mural on McKinney Mill's north side silo’s. He is an artist who creates street art and makes large-scale murals .

McKinney is aware of the importance arts play in improving the community and plans to paint a massive new mural on the silos. The city will have more murals. The mural is located directly across from Hwy 5 . The primary funding source will be grants and contributions. Gap funding will be provided by the city's hotel occupancy tax, which is not to exceed more than $380,000

The mural would serve as a visual link between downtown attractions and future revitalization projects on the east side of McKinney. Officials said that silos can be seen from Virginia Street, downtown. In January, the city launched a new website that details all the projects taking place in the area. It covers the expansion and relocation of Tupps Brewery as well as the new municipal building and road projects.

According to the website of Downtown McKinney, downtown boasts more than 120 shops and over two dozen restaurants. McKinney has seen more public murals in the last decade.

Interior designers can commission artwork that matches their project's color scheme, while Corporate clients may want to "brand" their piece with corporate colors to match their visual identity. No matter the reason, commissions are common in the art industry. Most artists will gladly create artwork according to client requests.

We understand that it can be daunting to commission art, especially for first-time buyers.

Where do you start?

First, you need to decide if you want artwork that is based on another piece or completely new artwork. Some clients may want something they cannot afford, so they will request the exact same imagery but in a different format. Even if the original artwork is not possible due to style or technique, most artists are happy to remake it. Sometimes people desire a more personal art piece. For example, a portrait of a loved one, a landscape or other artwork that has a special meaning.

Payment Agreement

Thank you to all of our downtown stakeholders for the support to welcome music lovers from near and far to enjoy and experience all that Downtown McKinney has to offer.

We've been overwhelmed by your participation, and we are thrilled to share that we have close to 100 bands performing over the two day festival. We'll have more detailed information to send soon - but here's what you need to know:

1. Downtown is NOT closed!
There are limited street closures - Kentucky Proper, Kentucky North, Kentucky South and Johnson Street. But streets will be open to accommodate vehicular traffic.

2. Guests do NOT need a ticket in order to visit stores.
There are a few main stage areas that are ticket holder access only, but for TMR Official Venues with music showcases, regular customers and ticket holders are all welcome. Ticket holders will be able to take advantage of lots of great deals from participating venues.

Safety is always first! We will keep this event intimate and safely distanced. Dining will be outside, tables will be adequately spaced 6 feet apart. We ask you to reserve your ticket space ahead of time. This will allow us to place everyone accordingly and safely. To further ensure safety we will wipe down and sanitize everything before and after usage.

This event will have two different seating times. Those times are 6pm-7:30 pm and 8pm -930pm .This will allow for a more spaced out intimate safe experience.

Then from 10 pm till 12am we will party under the McKinney stars.

Tickets are VERY Limited for social distancing! Additionally, you will choose an event window when you register. Please choose the 1.5 hour window you'd like to attend. You can choose both if you'd like.

Phase 2 - Open Texas update by Governor Abbott

Retail: (No Change)

Non-CISA retailers may operate up to 25% of the total listed occupancy.

Restaurants: (Updated)

Effective May 22, 2020, the occupancy limitation increases to 50% of the total listed occupancy inside the restaurant. This applies only to restaurants that have less than 51% of their gross sales from alcoholic beverages. Restaurants may continue to provide to-go or delivery services. Any components of the establishments or facilities that have interactive functions or exhibits, including child play areas, interactive games, and video arcades, must remain closed.

Bars: (New)

Effective May 22, 2020, bars or similar establishments may operate for in-person service up to 25% of the total listed occupancy of the establishment.

Massage and Personal-Care, Beauty Services: (New)

Businesses operating as massage establishments or providers of personal-care and beauty services not previously authorized to operate during the declared emergency may operate provided they can ensure at least 6 feet social distancing between operating work stations. Such businesses include but are not limited to massage establishments, other massage services by licensed massage therapists or other licensed persons, electrolysis, waxing, tattoo studios, piercing studios, and hair loss treatment and growth services.

Wedding Venues: (No Change)

Wedding venues and the services required to conduct weddings may operate. Outdoor venues should be used when possible. Weddings held inside a facility other than a church are limited to 25% of the total listed occupancy of the facility. Employees and contractors of the wedding venue are not counted towards the 25% occupancy limitation.

Gyms: (No Change)

Effective May 18, 2020, gyms and exercise facilities and classes may operate up to 25% of the total listed occupancy of the gym or exercise facility. Locker rooms and shower facilities must remain closed, but restrooms may be open. Employees and contractors of the gym or exercise facility are not counted towards the 25% occupancy limitation.

Office-Based Employers: (New)

Effective May 18, 2020, employers may operate their offices with up to the greater of 10 individuals or 25% of the total office workforce, provided the individuals maintain appropriate social distancing.

On the evening of October 4th, the gates to Kelly's Art Shack will open at 7 pm the band will perform at 8 pm -11 pm. Friends of friends are welcome! We believe in more the merrier! Lists are great ways to stay on track. Write down some big things you want to accomplish and some smaller things, too.

Check the list regularly

Don’t forget to check in and see how you’re doing. Just because you don’t achieve the big goals right away doesn’t mean you’re not making progress.

Reward yourself

When you succeed in achieving a goal, be it a big one or a small one, make sure to pat yourself on the back.

Think positively

Positive thinking is a major factor in success. So instead of mulling over things that didn’t go quite right, remind yourself of things that did.
